The USM-Merican Community Engagement Programme  is an initiative at  Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) . It falls under the  University Community Engagement (UCE) Cluster , which aims to establish the university as a responsible, relevant, and active partner in addressing community needs. The cluster facilitates collaboration between USM staff, students, alumni, and the community, seeking mutually beneficial relationships to address societal issues.

The initiative was started in 2019 with the initial involvement of four departments namely Family Medicine, Rehabilitation, Ophthalmology and Otorhinolaryngology departments. Since then, the programme has expanded to involve many other departments and unit in the university namely Dental, Breast Cancer Unit and others.

The aim of the programme is to provide health awareness and services especially to the bottom million of the population. This is done by organising outreach programmes focusing on remote places. Family Medicine Department involvement with the initiative is  centred on health education and  providing health screening for cardiovascular disease. During each programme, measurement of blood pressure, body mass index and random capillary blood sugar are done. This is followed by counselling by our medical officers and specialists regarding healthy lifestyle. Participants with abnormal findings and require further management will be referred to nearby health clinics or hospital.

The programme is also used to give exposure and experience to our master student regarding involvement in community work. The data from the programme is also used for research in community health.
