Reconstructive surgery is a specialised surgical discipline focused on restoring the form, function and appearance of body parts affected by congenital abnormalities, trauma, disease or surgical treatment. It aims to improve patients' quality of life by restoring physical function and achieving optimal aesthetic outcomes.
Since 1997, Hospital Pakar Universiti Sains Malaysia (HPUSM) has provided comprehensive reconstructive surgical services, including facial reconstruction following cancer treatment or trauma, breast and trunk reconstruction, pressure sore management and limb reconstruction following traumatic injuries or tumour removal.
These services are supported by multidisciplinary collaboration among plastic and reconstructive surgeons, neurosurgeons, oral and maxillofacial surgeons, orthopaedic surgeons and other healthcare specialists. This integrated approach enables comprehensive patient assessment, surgical planning and specialised treatment to achieve optimal clinical outcomes.
As one of the pioneering university teaching hospitals recognised by the Ministry of Health Malaysia for advanced training in plastic and reconstructive surgery, HPUSM continues to play an important role in specialised surgical care, professional training and the advancement of reconstructive surgery in Malaysia.
