BURN CARE & SURGERY

Burn injuries can cause significant physical, psychological and social challenges, often requiring prolonged treatment and rehabilitation. Comprehensive burn management involves a multidisciplinary approach to promote wound healing, restore function, minimise complications and improve patients' quality of life.

The Burn Unit at Hospital Pakar Universiti Sains Malaysia (HPUSM) was established on 1 May 2000 and became fully operational on 9 September 2004. Since its establishment, the Unit has served as a specialised referral centre for burn patients, particularly those from the East Coast of Peninsular Malaysia providing comprehensive care for patients with minor to severe burn injuries.

The Unit offers specialised burn management, including critical care, wound assessment and treatment, nutritional support, hydrotherapy, surgical interventions such as escharotomy, tangential excision and skin grafting, as well as rehabilitation services. Through multidisciplinary collaboration involving plastic and reconstructive surgeons, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, psychologists and other healthcare professionals, the Unit aims to optimise patients' physical, psychological, social and functional recovery.

In addition to clinical services, the Burn Unit serves as a centre for education, professional training and research in burn care and wound management. Through continuous improvements in clinical practice, research and innovation, the Unit remains committed to advancing burn treatment and improving patient outcomes.
