MASTER OF SURGERY (PLASTIC SURGERY)
Introduction
The School of Medical Sciences, Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) in collaboration with the Ministry of Health Malaysia (MOH), established the Master of Surgery (Plastic Surgery) training programme which commenced in July 2001.
The programme is designed to produce highly competent plastic surgeons with the highest standards of professional knowledge, clinical skills and ethical practice. Throughout the programme, trainees are exposed to comprehensive theoretical and practical training covering the full spectrum of plastic surgery subspecialties.
In addition to clinical training, students are required to undertake and successfully complete a research project as part of the requirements for the award of the Master of Surgery (Plastic Surgery) degree.
Admission requirement
Applicants should possess the following:
- Candidate MUST possess Medical Degree, such as MBBS, MD, MBChB or equivalent qualification accepted by the University Senate and is registered with the Malaysian Medical Council [MMC]
- Refer MMC’s portal for the List of Medical Institutions (Second Schedule Medical Act 1971): https://mmc.gov.my/medical-education-recognition/. Candidates holding degree from unrecognized institutions are required to sit and pass the EPR Examination prior admission. The application for EPR is to be made via the Medical Register Information and Technical System (MeRITS) at meritsmmc.moh.gov.my.
- Candidate MUST also possess at least 2 years experience after graduation, either in hospitals or other institutions certified and accepted by the University Senate.
- Extra requirement for M.S [Plastic Surgery] - Minimum eighteen (18) months experiences in General Surgery and six (6) months in other surgical base postings as a medical officer.
- Candidates are also required to attend a Medical Specialist Pre Entrance Programme Examination (MedEX)- minimum to achieve Band 4
- Candidates are also required to attend a pre-test/ interview before the final selection.
- Candidate MUST also in good physical and mental condition.
Durations
- Full time based only.
- Minimum candidature is 4 years and maximum 7 years.
Course Details
This course is a four year training program in Plastic Surgery. The Phase I (Year 1) is the Basic Surgical Sciences and Basic topics in plastic surgery and the Phase II (Year 2 & 3) is for Plastic surgical trainee. The Phase III (Year 4) is for Specialist in training.
