AMBIGOUS GENITALIA

WHAT IS SRY-GENE?

SRY (which stands for sex-determining region Y gene) is found on the Y chromosome. Usually, a woman has two X chromosomes (XX) and a man one X and one Y (XY). However, both male and female characteristics can sometimes be found in one individual, and it is possible to have XY women and XX men. Detection of SRY-gene (using PCR) in and individual, will help to confirm the genetic sex of that person.

WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF THIS TEST?

  • To determine the presence of SRY gene in individuals with sex conversion, XX male and XY female.
  • To determine the presence of SRY gene in female with Turner syndrome who regulary have shortage of one X chromosome or its part.
  • To determine the presence of SRY gene in children with different disorders of the sex differentiation.
