Message from Deputy Dean (Academic, Career & International)

prof madya dr kamarul1

Medical Doctor (MD) course is the only undergraduate program run by the School of Medical Sciences (SMS), Universiti Sains Malaysia.

Starting from this academic session (2016/2017), we are enrolling students not only from the usual pre-university’s program such as Matriculation, STPM and A-levels, but students with Bachelor degrees in Science subjects are also eligible to apply.

From next academic session (2017/2018) we will also be accepting applicants from foreign countries. We intend to not only equip them with the high quality medical education in SMS, but will also  get them to enjoy the charms  of Kelantan with the smiling faces and hospitality of Kelantanese.

Currently we are in the transition period of phasing out the old curriculum and replacing it with a new one which has actually been implemented in 2014. By academic session 2018/2019, all students will be in the new curriculum.

The new curriculum uses credit unit system for the whole program. Total credit unit for the core courses is 174. The students also need to complete 14 credit units of university’s courses as part of the criteria for graduation. Usage of credit unit system is hoped to enhance students’ mobility across medical schools in the country and abroad.

In the new curriculum, the number of clinical learning weeks is increased to 122 weeks. The main clinical training will be in year 3 to year 5. However the students are also exposed to some form of clinical learning beginning in the very first year of the program. This will help the students to be more prepared to face the challenges in their working lives later on.

More emphasized are given to student-oriented learning. E-learning, problem based learning (PBL) and clinical based learning are amongst the various student-centered learning methods encouraged to ensure the enjoyment of learning experience in SMS.

We hope their 5 years stay in SMS will be a fruitful, enjoyable and unforgettable journey of  their life, thus resulting in their  graduating  as competent and holistic doctors.

DEPUTY DEAN (Academic & Alumni)
