When to Apply

Applications for postgraduate studies are open throughtout the year with no closing dates but there are still cut-off date for coursework and mixed mode programmes which are as below:
1st Semester (September Intake) - 15 June
2nd Semester (February Intake) - 15 October

It is important to check the cut-off date for the chosen programme. Applications received before the cut-off date will be processed promptly, whereas applications received after the cut-off date will be processed for the next intake.

For research mode programme, application and registration can be anytime throughtout the year.

  • The Bahasa Malaysia (LKM 100) course is compulsory for all international students and must be taken and passed prior to graduation.The requirement pass grade is C. Registration for this course can be made at the School of Languages, Literacies and Translation at the university within the candidature period.
     
  • A TOEFL score of min. 80 (Internet-Based) /IELTS Band 6.0/ grade in other equivalent examinations may be required for certain programmes.
    • *Candidates are advised not to send the TOEFL scores directly to USM on their own. Please make requests for ETS to send the score to us. USM's institutional TOEFL code is 8900.

  • English Language Requirement: A high level of English language proficiency is required by all programmes, to ensure that students derive better benefits from the programmes and syllabus provided. Evidence of English language proficiency must be submitted together with your application forms. For international students, a score of min. 80 (Internet-Based) in the TOEFL or IELTS Band 6 is required by almost all study programmes in USM.

Be on the Fast-Track to a PhD from a Bachelor’s Degree and get awarded with a USM Fellowship

Applicants with a CGPA of 3.67 in their Bachelor’s degree can directly apply for PhD candidature through the following easy steps:

  1. Apply online at www.ips.usm.my. Click the Online Application Menu on the left panel of the website.
  2. Kindly enclose the following documents with the completed Application Form
    a) Two certified copies of degree scroll/certificates
    b) Two certified copies of academic transcripts
    c) Two certified copies of identity card /passport
    d) Comprehensive research proposal
    e) 4 passport-size, coloured photographs
  3. Send the Application Form to:

If you have an outstanding academic background, you could be considered for the USM Fellowship during the first year of your study in Universiti Sains Malaysia.

Qualification : Bachelor degree (Honours)

A) CGPA of at least 2.75
    Subject to additional requirement(s) by the School;

OR,

B) CGPA of 2.5 - 2.74

  1. Research experience – 1 year; or,
  2. Professional experience in related field- 1 year; or,
  3. Two (2) academic publications (journals, not proceeding(s) in related field; or,
  4. Grade B for major/ elective courses; or,
  5. Grade B+ for final year project;

OR,

C) CGPA of 2.00 - 2.49

  1. Research experience - 5 years or professional experience in related field - 5 years,and
  2. Two (2) academic publications (journal, not proceeding(s) in related field; or,
  3. Grade B for major / elective courses; or,
  4. Grade A- for final year project.


Doctor of Philosophy

I. Qualification: Master degree (Coursework or Mixed Mode)

A) CGPA of at least 3.00;


OR,

B) CGPA of 2.75 - 2.99

  1. Research experience – 5 years; or,
  2. Professional experience in related field – 5 years; or,
  3. Two (2) academic publications (journals, not proceedings) in the field applied; or,
  4. Grade B for major/elective courses; or,
  5. Grade B+ for Coursework Mode or P for Mixed Mode dissertation/project; 

OR,

C) CGPA of 2.5 - 2.74

  1. Research experience – 5 years or professional experience in related field – 5 years;and,
  2. Two (2) academic publications (journals, not proceedings) in the field applied for; or,
  3. Grade A- for major/elective courses; or,
  4. Grade A for Coursework Mode or P for Mixed Mode dissertation/project;

OR,

II. Qualification: Master degree (Research Mode)

OR,

III. Qualification: Bachelor degree
       First class honours or CGPA of at least 3.67
