RESEARCH MODE PROGRAMMES

SCHOOL OF MEDICAL SCIENCES

Since 1988, the School of Medical Sciences has embarked on postgraduate medical training and has so far produced specialists in various clinical specialties to meet the need of the country. Apart from the coursework and mix mode programmes, School of Medical Sciences also offers opportunities of postgraduate studies in wide range of medical disciplines.

The research programmes are implemented to produce graduates in medical and health related fields with strong capabilities to work effectively as key members of collaborative team to investigate medical and health related problems. Successful graduates are expected to have a career in public and private hospitals, academic institutions, research institutions and pharmaceutical industries.

The School of Medical Sciences has taken many measures to enhance its research activities in the field of medical sciences and technology. To ensure quality, our diagnostic and research laboratories and the medical school, are accredited with MS ISO 9001:2015, MS ISO 15189 and MS ISO 17125 respectively.

To enable students to conduct research in a conducive atmosphere, the School of Medical Sciences provides various facilities, including:

Central Research Laboratory (CRL)

The central research laboratory has four sections namely Basic Instrumentation, Analytical Biochemistry, Molecular Biology and Histopathology section which can be accessed by all staff and students. The primary purpose of the centre is to support research activities of the School of Medical Sciences and other institutions by providing advice, technical assistance and access to the scientific equipments and facilities.

Clinical Trial Unit (CTU)

A venue for national and international clinical trials.

Human Genome Centre (HGC)

A centre for research in human and medical genetics. The main objective of the centre is to raise the ability, strategy and consultation for human genome explorations for the importance and advancement of science and technology in the era of human genomics.

Fundamental and Clinical Neuroscience Laboratories

From a rapidly expanding infrastructure to support a steady growth of research and innovation in recent years at USM, both the Fundamental and Clinical Neuroscience laboratories at the Department of Neurosciences continue to facilitate key niche areas of our researchers whilst creating links for collaborations with others in the field of Neurosciences. This unique setting rivals only by few similar others in Malaysia.

Public Health Laboratory

A dedicated laboratory catering for public health research and aspires to be the centre of excellence in research and innovation in the field of public health and community medicine.

Tissue Bank Unit

A unit that engages in services involving biological tissues for transplantation and conducts biomaterial research and development.

Sport Science Unit

A centre for exercise and sports-related research. The sports science laboratory is well-equipped with machines and apparatus to conduct various invasive sports science-related research.

Reconstructive Sciences Unit

A centre for reconstructive research. The Tissue Engineering Laboratory & Integrated Reconstructive Science Laboratory (INTEREST) is an indication of commitment of the centre to embark on intense research activity and broader collaboration to achieve the quality and sustainability.

Women’s Health Development Unit

A centre focusing on multidisciplinary approach on research involving women and gender health issues. Its main mission is to promote health and wellness by facilitating a continuum of health care services, education and support for women.

Biostatistics & Research Methodology Unit

A dedicated unit to aid research in study designs and statistical analysis.

Scientific Publication Unit

A dedicated unit to assist researchers in publishing their scientific research findings in local, regional and international journals
