Participation in Professional Diving Medical Officers Course at the Royal Malaysian Navy Base in Lumut

From 19–30 May 2025, our physicians Dr. Masykurin and Dr. Syahmi, alongside our medical officer, Dr. Rasyidi were honored to join the Professional Diving Medical Officers Course at the Royal Malaysian Navy Base in Lumut. The course, organized by the Institute of Underwater and Hyperbaric Medicine (96 HAT Lumut), brought together participants from the Malaysian Armed Forces Health Services, VAT69, PASKAL, and PDRM Special Forces.
Over two intensive weeks, our team immersed themselves in both theoretical and hands-on training in diving and hyperbaric medicine including live dives, chamber operations, flooded ship survival, and firefighting drills. The course concluded with rigorous theory and practical exams, certifying them as Professional Diving Medical Officers.
Beyond the skills gained, our team forged meaningful networks with both medical and military professionals and experienced firsthand the Navy’s exemplary culture of discipline, excellence, and respect.

With this training, we aim to elevate our role, not just in treatment but also in diver health assessments, especially for the oil & gas sector. This milestone marks another step towards service excellence and sustainable income generation for our institution.

2nd Leadership & Governance in Emergency Medicine Conference 2025 (LeGoEM25) on 18th-19th February 2025 at Shah Alam Convention Centre (SACC), Selangor.

Leadership & Governance are paramount in Emergency Medicine, ensuring effective response to crises and optimal patient outcomes. A strong leader inspires confidence, promotes teamwork, and guides critical decision-making, all of which are essential in fast-paced and high-stress emergency situations. Whereas governance complements leadership by establishing clear policies, protocols, and standards that uphold patient safety, ethical practices, and operational efficiency. It provides the framework for accountability, quality assurance, and continuous improvement within Emergency Departments.

Thus, The Malaysian College of Emergency Physicians (CEP) together with the Department of Emergency Medicine of Universiti Sains Malaysia organised the 2nd Leadership & Governance in Emergency Medicine Conference 2025 (LeGoEM25) on 18th-19th February 2025 at Shah Alam Convention Centre (SACC), Selangor. It brings together leaders and practitioners in the Emergency Medicine field to discuss pressing issues, share knowledge, and enhance governance practices within the sector. The conference also received warm 104 participations from specialists, master students, medical officers, and administrator staff from all fraternities; government, and private sectors.
The conference also featured diverse line-up experts as notable speakers, including consultants from the Ministry of Health, Universities, private sectors, and NGOs, as well as respected leaders who successfully drove leadership.
The beauty of this conference is that it is fully conducted by MMed and former MMed of Emergency Medicine of USM, which has been shown to strengthen relationships between batches and promote USM's identity throughout Malaysia.
With the tagline “Leadership fosters excellence, good governance ensures stability”, LeGoEM hopes to come out more in the upcoming 3rd Leadership & Governance in Emergency Medicine Conference.
                                      .
                                      Prepared by,

Dr. Syafiqah Adnan, Secretary 1, 2nd Leadership & Governance in Emergency Medicine Conference 2025 (LeGoEM25).

According to the Director of USM Hospital, Dato' Professor Dr. Nik Hisamuddin Nik Ab. Rahman, PPPs are among the frontline teams that play a crucial role in the field of medicine and healthcare.

"This is evident through their involvement in pre-hospital care and ambulance services, in addition to their collective efforts in leading and coordinating these services by acting as the 'first responders'."

2024 Emergency Department Bowling Tournament – A Stronger Bond

We successfully organized the 2024 Emergency Department Head’s Bowling Cup Tournament, which took place at Lite Superbowl JB7, Mydin Tunjong, Kota Bharu, on February 24.

This year's tournament was met with an overwhelming response, with 16 teams consisting of 48 staff members from the Emergency Department competing for the championship title and the rotating trophy. Dr. Mohammad Zikri Ahmad, the Acting Head of the Emergency Department, also graced the event, not just as the guest of honor but also actively participating by rolling up his sleeves and challenging the other teams for some fierce competition.

The Championship, the Rotating Trophy, and the Best Player award were claimed by the team Code Bowl. The runner-up position went to the Tanjak team, while The Outlaner managed to secure third place with a very narrow margin. The winners received trophies, medals, and hampers as prizes. Consolation prizes were also given by Dr. Mohammad Zikri Ahmad to all participating teams.

Overall, the event received positive feedback, and many expressed hope for a similar tournament to be held again next year. The tournament was seen as a great success in strengthening the bond among the Emergency Department staff and in promoting sportsmanship, responsibility, teamwork, and cooperation.

Congratulations to all the teams that participated and supported this year’s bowling tournament. A heartfelt thank you to the Head of Department, Associate Professor Dr. Shaik Farid Abdull Wahab, and the ED Club for kindly sponsoring the trophies and prizes. Special thanks also go to the organizing committee for their hard work and dedication in ensuring the smooth running of this event.
