Master of Pathology (Medical Genetics)

INTRODUCTION

Master of Pathology (Medical Genetics) was started in 2010 in USM with the first graduate in 2014. This program has been established and approved by Ministry of Health, Malaysia to be incorporated into Master of Pathology Program.

The aim of this program is to produce medical genetic pathologists who can contribute to the multidisciplinary range of skills required with within pathology services to aid in the diagnosis, management and treatment of patients with disorders arising from genomic alterations.

The Master of Pathology (Medical Genetics) training program is coordinated by Human Genome Centre, School of Medical Sciences, Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM), Health Campus, Kubang Kerian, Kelantan.

VISION

Our vision is to produce medical genetic pathologies who able to propel the field of genetics and genomics for sustainable health care.

MISSION

This pioneering program positions the genetic pathologists to practice as medical specialists and manage genetic laboratory. Training is also targeted to equip the genetic pathologist to contribute effectively to diagnostic services, academic and research.

CURRICULUM STRUCTURE

This is a course work post graduate program which is divided into Stage 1 and Stage 2. To complete the course, the candidates need to complete a minimum of FOUR (4) years training and pass the Stage 1 and Stage 2 examinations compulsorily.


Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)  & Master of Science (Human Genetics) [Research Mode]

Postgraduate study (research mode) at Human Genome Centre encompassing of Master of Science (MSc) and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD). Research fields of Human Genome Centre include:
a) Cytogenetics
b) Cancer genetics and genomics
c) Pharmacogenetics
d) Medical genetics
e) Personalized medicine
f) Genetics of infertility

    2. ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

    Applicants should possess the following:

    • A MBBS/MD or equivalent degree, BSc in Medical Sciences/Biotechnology/Biology/ Chemistry/Physics or other related fields from a recognised university.

    3. LANGUAGE REQUIREMENTS

     (Applicable for International Applicants Only)

    The minimum score for each programme can be vary from the below list, candidates are required to check for each programme requirements.

    • A minimum score of 40 for TOEFL (Internet-based); or
    • A minimum of Band 7.5 for TOEFL Essentials (Online); or
    • A minimum of Band 5 for IELTS; or
    • A minimum score of 47 for PTE; or
    • A minimum score of 154 for Cambridge English (CAE/CPE); or
    • A minimum score of 154 for Linguaskill Online; or
    • A minimum of Band 3.5 for MUET Exemption is given to candidate if:

    English is the candidate’s mother tongue or National Language; or
    Candidate graduated from an Institution of Higher Learning in which the medium of instruction at Bachelor and/or Master degree level is English (statement of proof required)

    4. DURATION

    • Full-time: Min 2 semesters / Max 6 semesters
    • Part-time: Min 4 semesters / Max 12 semesters
