INTRODUCTION TO OUR DEPARTMENT

Department of Medical Education is a major department in the medical school which provides consultation on medical education including teaching and learning, students assessment, faculty development, etc. Our department has 9 qualified medical educationists and 1 registered counsellor.The department was established in 197 The first HOD of Department of Medical Education was Professor Rogayah Ja’afar.The list of previous HOD – Professor Rogayah Ja’afar, Professor Rahman Esa, Dr Ahmad Fuad Abdul Rahim, Associate Professor Dr Muhamad Saiful Bahri (2016-until now)

As the school has adapted the SPICES curriculum as its basic education strategy, the department of medical education has main roles as provider of the various faculty development program to the academic staff of the school . The first faculty development workshop on Problem Based Learning was carried out in 1986.  Since then, a yearly faculty development program with a series of six to eight workshops are run annually on various topics in medical education such as curriculum planning, teaching learning approaches, student assessment methods and program evaluation. Being in a lovely health campus in Kubang Kerian together with Dental School and Allied Health Sciences School, the department also has been involved in the faculty department program in its neighbourhood schools. The department also involved in the 2 weeks Teaching Learning Course for new academician throughout health campus. this is to ensure the academicians are competent to teach and adapt to the research environment of the university. The department also involves in various outreach faculty development programs in various department in the school 

The department has been offering a master of medical education course since 2003. The course aims to contribute to the establishment of a pool of medical educationists who will be advising medical professionals and evaluating medical and allied health programmes at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels as well as increasing candidates' knowledge, skills and attitudes regarding medical education so as to increase their effectiveness as teachers or trainers in their respective institutions.

The department also involve in fulfilling the accreditation requirement of the School of Medical Sciences (PPSP) which has succeeded in fulfilling the certification requirements   of the   Malaysian Qualification Agency (MQA).  

Following the APEX university status, the School has been given autonomy status to  select   our own students to do medicine. The department of medical education has been given opportunity to assist   the school in student selection process since more than a decade ago.Various tasks involved in selecting the right candidates in the school such as selecting the team, interviewers, preparing interviews materials, conducting workshop for the interviewers, analysing the results. Since 2015, when the school moved toward multiple mini-interview to get a better perception of the candidates, the department has actively involved in recruiting the interviewers. As the first medical school in the country who practised MMI, the department has since handled various workshops regarding MMI in other medical school.
