    When to Apply

    Applications for postgraduate studies are open throughtout the year with no closing dates but there are still cut-off date for coursework and mixed mode programmes which are as below:
    1st Semester (September Intake) - 15 June
    2nd Semester (February Intake) - 15 October

    It is important to check the cut-off date for the chosen programme. Applications received before the cut-off date will be processed promptly, whereas applications received after the cut-off date will be processed for the next intake.

    For research mode programme, application and registration can be anytime throughtout the year.

  • Language Requirement

    Language Requirement

    • The Bahasa Malaysia (LKM 100) course is compulsory for all international students and must be taken and passed prior to graduation.The requirement pass grade is C. Registration for this course can be made at the School of Languages, Literacies and Translation at the university within the candidature period.
       
    • A TOEFL score of min. 80 (Internet-Based) /IELTS Band 6.0/ grade in other equivalent examinations may be required for certain programmes.
      • *Candidates are advised not to send the TOEFL scores directly to USM on their own. Please make requests for ETS to send the score to us. USM's institutional TOEFL code is 8900.

    • English Language Requirement: A high level of English language proficiency is required by all programmes, to ensure that students derive better benefits from the programmes and syllabus provided. Evidence of English language proficiency must be submitted together with your application forms. For international students, a score of min. 80 (Internet-Based) in the TOEFL or IELTS Band 6 is required by almost all study programmes in USM.

    The main objective of this Integrated Neuroscience Programme is to equip and train both local and international students with a limited neuroscience background who wish to build a career focus in this field for an independent research and teaching careers as brain scientists within a diverse inter-disciplinary fields.

    Programme Overview:

    This Programme offers a unique access to the postgraduate fundamental neuroscience education and research training in Malaysia, based at the Department of Neurosciences, USM School of Medical Sciences. The integrated approach implies that candidates could progress from an initial Master of Neuroscience to a follow-through Doctor of Neuroscience (i.e. a unique ‘1+3’ track).This Master to Doctoral progress is subjected to meeting satisfactory overall achievements and passing a pre-doctoral assessment. The conferred final degree award, for Master of Neuroscience (M.Neurosc) or Doctor of Neuroscience (Neurosc.D), will depend upon the concluding level successfully fulfilled by candidates.

    As a ‘1+3’ track, candidates are expected to complete the Programme in 4 years as a whole, where for M.Neurosc (minimum: 1 year; maximum: 2 years), and for Neurosc.D (minimum: 3 years; maximum: 5 years). As a mixed-mode programme, the teaching and learning involve didactic classes (lectures and tutorials), coursework, seminars, laboratory placements, research project and a final thesis defense (20-30% coursework & 70-80% research).

    For entry into the Integrated Neuroscience Programme, applicants should have:

    • A Bachelor Degree (in Basic Sciences, Medical & Health Sciences or related fields) with a CGPA > 3.0 from a recognised institution, or
    • A Bachelor Degree in the fields stated above with CGPA < 3.0 but > 2.5 may also apply, provided this is supported by no less than 2 years research experience in the related fields, or had acquired a commendable grade (Grade A and equivalent) in the respective Bachelor Degree final year project.


    Additional admission notes for applicants:

    • At present, intakes are on a full-time basis only.
    • Foreign applicants are required to have a minimum score of 550 in TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) or minimum score of 6.0 in IELTS (International English Language Testing System). Evidence for this must be submitted with the application form.

    Master of Science (Medical Education)


    The course aims to contribute to the establishment of a pool of medical educationists who will be advising medical professionals and evaluating medical and allied health programmes at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels as well as increasing candidates' knowledge, skills and attitudes regarding medical education so as to increase their effectiveness as teachers or trainers in their respective institutions.

    It is also hoped that this programme will prepare potential candidates to carry out further responsibilities as academicians and do research, publish articles, as well as undertake academic administration and management.

    The course consists of 4 semesters. In the first 2 semesters, candidates will be full-time students undergoing coursework. A research project will be carried out in the third and fourth semesters in the candidate's individual home institutions.

    Master of Science (Clinical Anatomy)  

    Overview
    The main objective is to Produce master of science graduates in human anatomy that are knowledgeable, highly skilled, professional, ethical and able to contribute to national development. The programme consists of four semesters. The first two semesters consist of basic training in the form of lectures, presentations, practicals, online learning, assignments and student-directed learning. Candidates would be exposed to clinical anatomy content in these sessions. Research work and dissertation writing are to be carried out during the last two semesters. The course covers various anatomy subjects as mentioned in the course curriculum.

    To enter the Master of Science (Clinical Anatomy) programme, the candidate must have one of the following qualifications:

    1. Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) or Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Bachelor of Dentistry or Bachelor of Veterinary Science from a local university or from a university approved by the University Senate
    2. A Bachelor's Degree containing human anatomy subjects such as Health Sciences, Biomedical, Pharmaceutical or its equivalent from local universities or from universities approved by the University Senate provided the following additional requirements are fulfilled:

      1. Obtained CGPA of more than 3.00 or CGPA of 2.75 to 3.00 with at least 3 years’ experience in relevant fields
      2. At least grade B in human anatomy subjects

    The main objective of this Integrated Neuroscience Programme is to equip and train both local and international students with a limited neuroscience background who wish to build a career focus in this field for an independent research and teaching careers as brain scientists within a diverse inter-disciplinary fields.

    Programme Overview:

    This Programme offers a unique access to the postgraduate fundamental neuroscience education and research training in Malaysia, based at the Department of Neurosciences, USM School of Medical Sciences. The integrated approach implies that candidates could progress from an initial Master of Neuroscience to a follow-through Doctor of Neuroscience (i.e. a unique ‘1+3’ track).This Master to Doctoral progress is subjected to meeting satisfactory overall achievements and passing a pre-doctoral assessment. The conferred final degree award, for Master of Neuroscience (M.Neurosc) or Doctor of Neuroscience (Neurosc.D), will depend upon the concluding level successfully fulfilled by candidates.

    As a ‘1+3’ track, candidates are expected to complete the Programme in 4 years as a whole, where for M.Neurosc (minimum: 1 year; maximum: 2 years), and for Neurosc.D (minimum: 3 years; maximum: 5 years). As a mixed-mode programme, the teaching and learning involve didactic classes (lectures and tutorials), coursework, seminars, laboratory placements, research project and a final thesis defense (20-30% coursework & 70-80% research).

    Admission Criteria:

    For entry into the Integrated Neuroscience Programme, applicants should have:

    • A Bachelor Degree (in Basic Sciences, Medical & Health Sciences or related fields) with a CGPA > 3.0 from a recognised institution, or
    • A Bachelor Degree in the fields stated above with CGPA < 3.0 but > 2.5 may also apply, provided this is supported by no less than 2 years research experience in the related fields, or had acquired a commendable grade (Grade A and equivalent) in the respective Bachelor Degree final year project.


    Additional admission notes for applicants:

    • At present, intakes are on a full-time basis only.
    • Subject to meeting the required admission criteria, applicants may be invited to a pre-admission interview to complete the application process
