HISTORY OF ESTABLISHMENT

The The Endocrine Laboratory has existed at the Hospital Universiti Sains Malaysia around 1985 and has grown rapidly under the management of Yg. Bhg. Professor Emeritus Dato 'Paduka Mustaffa Embong. The field of endocrinology is a very broad field of medicine. The endocrine system consists of a group of organs, whose main function is to produce and secrete hormones directly into the bloodstream. Hormones act as messengers to coordinate the activities of various organs of the body.

This laboratory is able to provide human hormone level measurement services by immunoassay thus playing an important role in interpreting and diagnosing the patient's health level. Close cooperation has been carried out between this laboratory with the O&G department such as in the field of infertility (infertility) and the Department of Pediatrics in the field of infant health where a screening program for congenital hypothyroidism in infants born in usm hospital has been started since 2003.

Towards the achievement as an excellent institution of higher learning of international standard, the laboratory also engages either among the university staff through research grants provided as well as research with external companies. The laboratory is also involved in practical teaching given to USM medical students and other IPTA students who are placed in the laboratory on a regular basis.

All tests performed by this laboratory are by using consumables purchased from local supplier companies that are agents to international firms.

In addition to providing diagnostic services to doctors who treat patients in USM clinics and wards, the laboratory also receives requests from outside to conduct endocrine tests according to limited allocations and finances.
