INTRODUCTION

The Department of Ophthalmology was founded in 1993. In 2019, the department changed its name to the Department of Ophthalmology & Visual Science to better reflect its dedication to advancing clinical eye care and scientific research. It is currently led by Professor Dr. Hajah Shatriah Ismail, a dedicated Strabismus & Paediatric Ophthalmologist. Throughout 30-year history, the department has made a profound impact for the School of Medical Sciences, Health Campus, Universiti Sains Malaysia as well as on the field of ophthalmology. We are proud to have five distinguished professors who are recognized both in Malaysia and internationally. We have produced over 200 highly skilled ophthalmologists throughout Malaysia.

Education and Training: The department offers comprehensive education and training programs for undergraduate and postgraduate students, as well as continuing medical education for practicing professionals. Our curriculum emphasizes both theoretical knowledge and hands-on clinical experience to prepare students for successful careers in ophthalmology and related fields. Postgraduate training programs include residency training in ophthalmology, fellowship programs for subspecialty training, and research opportunities for graduate students pursuing advanced degrees. Our Master in Ophthalmology (MMed Ophthalmology) program aimed at training aspiring ophthalmologists to become skilled clinicians, researchers, and educators in the field of eye care. This program provides a comprehensive curriculum covering various aspects of ophthalmology, including diagnostic techniques, medical and surgical treatments, and management of ocular diseases. In addition to the MMed Ophthalmology program, the department is actively involved in undergraduate teaching to provide basic ophthalmology exposure to medical students. Through lectures, workshops, and clinical rotations, undergraduate students gain foundational knowledge and practical skills in the evaluation and management of common eye conditions.

Faculty and Staff: The department boasts a dedicated team of faculty members, researchers, clinicians, and support staff who are committed to the department's mission. Our faculty members are experts in various subfields of ophthalmology and visual science, including cornea and external diseases, glaucoma, retina, paediatric ophthalmology, neuro-ophthalmology, orbit and oculoplastics as well as laser refractive surgeries.

Research and Innovation: The department is actively engaged in cutting-edge research aimed at advancing the understanding of ocular diseases, developing innovative treatments, and improving patient outcomes. We are committed to translating our research findings into clinical practice, with the ultimate goal of improving the quality of eye care delivery and addressing the unmet needs of patients with ocular disorders.

Community Engagement: We are actively involved in community outreach initiatives aimed at raising awareness about eye health, preventing blindness, and addressing the social and economic determinants of vision loss. Through educational programs, screenings, and outreach clinics, we strive to reach underserved populations and empower individuals to take control of their eye health. We collaborate with local organizations, government agencies, and non-profit groups to implement sustainable solutions for improving access to eye care services and reducing disparities in eye health outcomes.
