The Department of Medical Microbiology & Parasitology is at the forefront of pioneering research projects that address critical health challenges. Our research spans a wide array of topics, including the study of infectious diseases, antimicrobial resistance, vaccine development, and parasitic infections. By leveraging advanced technologies and innovative methodologies, our dedicated researchers work tirelessly to unravel the complexities of pathogens and their interactions with hosts. Collaborative efforts with leading institutions and organizations worldwide enhance the impact and scope of our research. Through these projects, we aim to advance scientific knowledge, develop effective treatments, and improve public health outcomes on a global scale.

AVF Marathon 2024

Arteriovenous fistula (AVF) Marathon 2024

Pada 27 Jun 2024 sehingga 29 Jun 2024, satu program klinikal; AVF marathon 2024 telah berlangsung dengan jayanya. Program ini adalah hasil usaha sama Jabatan Anesestiologi dan Rawatan Rapi, Jabatan Pembedahan Plastik dan Rekonstruktif dan Jabatan Radiologi Hospital Universiti Sains Malaysia.

Tujuan utama program ini diadakan adalah untuk memperkasakan peserta dengan Kemahiran yang lebih jitu dalam meningkatkan kualiti prosedur penghasilan fistula arteriovena. Fistula arteriovena diperlukan oleh pesakit buah pinggang tahap akhir untuk melakukan hemodialisis secara berkala.

Peserta dari Jabatan Pembedahan Plastik dan Rekonstruktif didedahkan dengan ceramah dan latihan amali pada hari Khamis 27 June 2024, berkaitan dengan pemetaan vena menggunakan mesin ultrasound. Jabatan Radiologi telah mengurus selia sesi ini dengan cemerlang. Di pagi hari Jumaat pula, giliran peserta dari Jabatan Anestesiologi dan Rawatan Rapi, didedahkan dengan pengetahuan berkenaan pembiusan setempat untuk membolehkan pembedahan untuk menghasilkan fistula arteriovena dapat dijalankan dengan lancar dan selamat. Dalam sesi ini, peserta didedahkan dengan latihan amali secara langsung oleh pakar-pakar untuk mendapatkan imej ultrabunyi yang optimum untuk meningkatkan profil keselamatan dan keberjayaan bius setempat.

Pada 29 Jun 2024, adalah waktu peserta mengaplikasikan pengetahuan yang diperoleh, dengan melaksanakan pembiusan dan pembedahan kepada pesakit-pesakit yang terpilih; dengan seliaan rapat dari pakar-pakar. Seramai 17 pesakit telah terlibat dalam program ini.

Sesuatu yang membanggakan, kesemua pesakit yang terlibat telah menjalani pembiusan dan pembedahan dengan lancar tanpa komplikasi major. Maklum balas yang diterima dari pesakit-pesakit sehari selepas pembedahan juga amat memberangsangkan. Rata-rata berpuas hati dan meluahkan rasa syukur dengan perkhidmatan yang diberikan sepanjang program ini berjalan.

Terima kasih tidak terhingga kepada barisan ahli jawatankuasa yang terdiri daripada staff-staff Hospital Universiti Sains Malaysia dari tiga jabatan terlibat dan juga Jabatan Perubatan Am yang bertungkus lumus bagi memastikan program ini dapat dilaksanakan dengan lancar.

Penghargaan yang tidak terhingga juga diberikan kepada ECSNR, ORALIX dan ASPEN Malaysia kerana telah memberi penajaan berupa peralatan dan kudapan.

Diharapkan program yang memberi banyak manfaat bukan sahaja kepada peserta tetapi tentu juga kepada pesakit ini dapat dilaksanakan lagi di masa hadapan.
