Simulated Patient (SP) Management Course

The Integrated Clinical Simulation Centre (i‑CSC), Universiti Sains Malaysia, successfully conducted a Simulated Patient (SP) Management Course aimed at enhancing the effective utilisation and management of simulated patients in medical education and assessment.

The programme was designed to equip participants with a comprehensive understanding of Simulated Patient (SP) methodology, which plays a critical role in developing clinical communication skills, professionalism, and structured assessment through simulation‑based learning.

Throughout the course, participants were introduced to key components of SP management, including:

  • Fundamentals of simulated patient methodology
  • Roles and responsibilities of SP coordinators and trainers
  • Recruitment, training, and performance standardisation of SPs
  • Scenario development aligned with learning outcomes
  • Use of SPs in teaching, OSCEs, and clinical assessment
  • Feedback delivery and performance evaluation techniques

Integration of Moulage in Simulation Training

A key highlight of the programme was the incorporation of moulage techniques to enhance the realism of simulation scenarios. Participants were introduced to the principles and application of moulage to simulate:

  • Injuries, wounds, and clinical conditions
  • Physical signs and visual cues for patient scenarios
  • Realistic case representations to support immersive learning

Through demonstration and guided sessions, participants gained exposure to how moulage can be effectively used to increase authenticity, improve learner engagement, and support scenario‑based teaching.

The course also included interactive workshops and practical sessions, allowing participants to practise managing simulated patient encounters, apply moulage techniques, and ensure consistency and quality in SP delivery.

This programme supports the continuous development of educators and healthcare trainers by strengthening their ability to design and implement high‑fidelity, simulation‑based learning experiences, particularly in communication skills, clinical reasoning, and assessment.

The successful organisation of this course reflects i‑CSC’s commitment to advancing innovative simulation practices, faculty development, and excellence in medical education.
