The Department of Biostatistics and Research Methodology was established in 1997 as the Biostatistics and Research Methodology Unit. In August 2026, its status was uplifted to a department to reflect its growing roles. Since then, it has played a significant role in spreading applied statistical knowledge across various disciplines at the Health Campus, Universiti Sains Malaysia, significantly contributing to evidence-based decision-making in health and public policy. It offers the Master of Science (Medical Statistics) mixed-mode programme and welcomes applications for PhD and MSc by research in medical statistics (biostatistics), epidemiology, and community medicine. The department is committed to fostering rigorous research that addresses complex health challenges in the region. Furthermore, it actively organises workshops on statistical methods and research methodology in medicine and health sciences, fostering interdisciplinary collaboration and promoting advanced skill development among academics and practitioners.
