  • About MyNRP

    The Malaysian Neonatal Resuscitation Programme (MyNRP) is Malaysia's national neonatal resuscitation training programme, coordinated by the Perinatal Society of Malaysia (PSM). It aims to equip healthcare professionals with the knowledge, technical skills, and teamwork required to provide effective resuscitation for newborn infants immediately after birth.

    The programme follows internationally recognised neonatal resuscitation principles and incorporates the latest evidence-based recommendations from the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) and the American Heart Association (AHA), while being adapted to meet the needs of healthcare providers in Malaysia. 

    The USM MyNRP Learning Hub complements the national programme by providing continuous learning resources, educational updates, simulation materials, and practical guidance to support healthcare professionals beyond the classroom.

  • What is MyNRP?

    The Malaysian Neonatal Resuscitation Programme (MyNRP) is a structured educational programme designed to train healthcare professionals in the assessment, resuscitation, and stabilization of newborn infants during the critical first minutes after birth.

    The programme combines self-directed learning, knowledge assessment, hands-on skills training, integrated clinical scenarios, simulation-based learning, and structured debriefing to ensure participants are competent in both technical and non-technical skills.

    MyNRP promotes a standardised approach to neonatal resuscitation across Malaysia, ensuring that newborns receive safe, effective, and evidence-based care regardless of where they are born.

  • Why Neonatal?

    Birth represents one of the most critical physiological transitions in human life. While most newborns establish breathing spontaneously, some require immediate intervention to initiate effective respiration and support cardiovascular adaptation.

    Timely neonatal resuscitation can significantly reduce neonatal mortality and morbidity by ensuring that appropriate interventions are delivered during the first "Golden Minute" after birth.

    The primary goal of MyNRP is to ensure that at least one healthcare provider skilled in neonatal resuscitation is present at every delivery, with additional trained personnel readily available whenever advanced resuscitation is required.

    Continuous education, regular simulation training, and teamwork are essential to maintaining these lifesaving skills and improving outcomes for newborns throughout Malaysia.

  • History of MyNRP

    History of MyNRP in Malaysia

     

    Prior to 1996, Malaysia did not have a national neonatal resuscitation training programme. At that time, perinatal asphyxia was one of the leading causes of perinatal mortality.

    Recognising the need for a structured national programme, the Perinatal Society of Malaysia (PSM), the Ministry of Health Malaysia, and the Department of Paediatrics, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) jointly introduced the Malaysian Neonatal Resuscitation Programme (NRP) in September 1996.

    The programme was adapted from the Neonatal Resuscitation Program developed by the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) and the American Heart Association (AHA). To facilitate nationwide implementation, the original training materials were translated into Bahasa Malaysia, and the first group of Malaysian instructors was trained under the guidance of Professor Ronald Bloom from the United States.

    Since then, MyNRP has expanded across all Malaysian states, with regular updates following each new edition of the international NRP guidelines. Today, MyNRP is widely taught to doctors, nurses, assistant medical officers, and other healthcare professionals involved in newborn care throughout the country.

    Hospital Pakar Universiti Sains Malaysia (HPUSM) has been actively involved in delivering the Malaysian Neonatal Resuscitation Programme as part of its commitment to excellence in neonatal care, education, and professional development.

    The Neonatology Unit regularly organises:

    • Simulation-based neonatal emergency training

    The establishment of the USM MyNRP Learning Hub represents the next phase of this educational journey by creating a digital platform where healthcare professionals can access learning materials, videos, algorithms, clinical updates, and simulation resources anytime and anywhere.

    Through this initiative, HPUSM aims to strengthen neonatal resuscitation education, encourage lifelong learning, and contribute to improving neonatal outcomes across Malaysia.

MASTER OF MEDICINE (PAEDIATRICS)

1. Objective

The philosophy of our postgraduate programme is to provide training by apprenticeship and learning from patients with emphasis on self-directed learning for a duration of 4 years.

 

2. Background

The School of Medical Sciences was established in 1979 to cater for the need of undergraduate training. Since 1988, the School of Medical Sciences has embarked on postgraduate medical training and have so far produced specialist in various clinical specialties to meet the need of the country. The training programme are conducted by coursework and currently there are eighteen postgraduate specialist training programme.

 

3. Entry requirements

  1. MMC registration certificate (Temporary Practicing Certificate)
  2. Documentation of housemanship training or its equivalent
  3. Evidence of English language proficiency (IELTS 7 or equivalent) for international trainees
  4. A certified report showing proof of completion of 4 months of paediatric posting as a House-officer or medical officer
  5. Documentation of successful completion of ALL required Paediatric Entrustable Professional Activities/ Essential Learning Activities - EPAs/ELAs (please refer to MOH website – Medical officer career development)
  6. Evidence of passing the Malaysian Paediatric Entrance Examination (MEDEX) OR MRCPCH part 1b OR 2a within the last 5 years prior to application

 

4. Structure of course

Before completion of the programme, the candidate has to attend courses (with certificate of completion):

  1. Recognised neonatal resuscitation programme trainer.
  2. Recognised advanced paediatric life-support provider
  3. Basic Statistics and research methodology course (organized by the respective universities)

Before completion of the programme, the candidate is recommended to attend the following courses:

  1. Communication/ Soft Skills
  2. Bioethics
  3. Scientific writing
  4. Clinical Practice course (organized by the respective university or Clinical Research Centre [CRC] Malaysia

 

5. Duration of study

1. The duration of study will be four (4) full years as a full-time student.

2. The maximum duration of study shall not exceed seven (7) years.

 

6. Formative assessments

Candidates must keep a portfolio/logbook as an evidence of their formative assessments which need to be submitted 3 monthly.

7. Examination formats 

Part I Examination (Conjoint examination) consists of a theory paper which is divided into Paper 1 and Paper 2

Paper 2

  • Long Modified Essay Question (MEQ)
  • Short Modified Essay Question (MEQ)
  • Slides

 

Part 2 Examination is a conjoint clinical examination which has 5 components

  • Classical Long Case
  • Observed Long Case
  • Short Cases
  • Communication
  • Emergency Paediatrics

 

 8. RESEARCH PROJECT

  • The objective of the research project is to introduce the candidate to research methodology, data analysis and journal writing.
  • The project must be conducted according to guidelines approved by the respective university
  •  The research report may be submitted as a journal publication or dissertation book.
