🌱 i‑CSC Strengthens Sustainability Culture Through 5R Initiative and Green Workplace Practices
The Integrated Clinical Simulation Centre (i‑CSC), Universiti Sains Malaysia, continues to support the PPSP Green Office 2026 Initiative through the implementation of practical sustainability measures and staff awareness programmes aimed at fostering a greener and more responsible workplace culture. The initiative is aligned with the sustainability agenda championed by Universiti Sains Malaysia and the School of Medical Sciences (PPSP).
As part of this effort, i‑CSC organised a 5R Culture Sharing Session involving staff from i‑CSC, MPG and BPSP to promote the principles of Refuse, Rethink, Reduce, Reuse and Recycle (5R). The session encouraged staff to integrate sustainable practices into daily operations, resource management, training activities, and office administration.Â
Beyond awareness initiatives, i‑CSC translated these principles into action through several sustainability improvements within its office and skills laboratory environment. One notable achievement was the establishment of a dedicated Recycle Corner, designed to encourage proper waste segregation and recycling practices amongst staff and visitors.
The Recycle Corner serves as a central collection point for recyclable materials and promotes the separation of:
- Paper products
- Plastic and aluminium containers
- Glass and other recyclable materials
In addition, obsolete materials and previously unused items were repurposed and creatively reused to support environmental sustainability while reducing unnecessary waste. The initiative reflects the 5R philosophy by extending the lifespan of materials and encouraging responsible resource utilisation.
The centre also introduced various green workplace practices, including:
- Greater use of digital documents to reduce paper consumption
- Reuse of one‑sided papers for internal notes and drafts
- Sharing of equipment and resources where appropriate
- Encouraging responsible procurement and consumption practices
- Enhancing workplace aesthetics through indoor greenery and environmental awareness displays
The implementation of these initiatives supports several key Green Office components, including waste management, resource efficiency, staff engagement, and sustainability awareness. These efforts contribute towards creating a cleaner, more organised, and environmentally responsible learning and working environment.
At i‑CSC, sustainability is viewed as a continuous journey rather than a one‑time project. Through collective commitment and small daily actions, staff are encouraged to foster habits that contribute to environmental conservation and organisational excellence.
"Sustainability Begins With Our Actions." Through embracing the 5R culture, i‑CSC remains committed to supporting USM's sustainability vision while creating meaningful and lasting positive impacts within the workplace.
