• be nationals of a developing country (other than Malaysia);
• must not hold any visa for temporary or permanent residency in Malaysia or any developed country;
• hold a PhD degree in a field of the natural sciences;
• apply for the fellowship within five years of having obtained a PhD degree in a field of the natural sciences;
• be regularly employed in a developing country (other than Malaysia) and hold a research assignment there;
• Provide an official Preliminary Acceptance Letter from Institute of Postgraduate Studies (IPS), USM to TWAS. Requests for preliminary acceptance letter must be directed to the Dean, Institute of Postgraduate Studies, USM who will facilitate assignment of a host supervisor.

TWAS-USM Fellowship

TWAS stands for the Third World Academy of Science. Each year, the TWAS Fellowship Programmes, which operate under agreements with governments and national organizations in developing countries, offer a number of fellowships to young scientists from developing countries to carry out postgraduate research in developing countries other than their own.

The TWAS-USM Fellowship Programme for postgraduate research offers fellowships to young scientists from developing countries (other than Malaysia) who wish to pursue studies leading to a PhD degree in the natural sciences with Universiti Sains Malaysia.
 

Programme Details

1. TWAS-USM Fellowship Programme is tenable in the departments, institutions and laboratories of the Universiti Sains Malaysia for a period of up to three years for studies leading to a PhD degree in natural sciences.
2. The academic year in Malaysia begins in September and the second semester in February of each year. Candidates will enroll for their PhD at a USM school/centre of excellence and must observe Universiti Sains Malaysia's academic calendar and be ready to start their fellowship on the first day of classes/courses.
3. Universiti Sains Malaysia will provide a standard monthly allowance which should be used to cover living costs, such as accommodation and food.
4. The language of instruction is English.

Eligibility

Applicants for this Fellowship Programme must meet the following criteria:

• Be a maximum age of 35 years on 31 December of the application year.
• Be nationals of a developing country (other than Malaysia).
• Hold a Master's degree in a field of natural sciences.
  • Provide an official Acceptance Letter from a department, laboratory or institute at Universiti Sains Malaysia (see sample Acceptance Letter included in the Application Form). Requests for acceptance must be directed to the Dean, Institute of Postgraduate Studies, Universiti Sains Malaysia via twasusm [AT] gmail [DOT] com
  • Provide evidence of proficiency in English

Submitting your application

• The deadline for receipt of applications is 1st September of each year.
• Applicants should submit the Acceptance Letter from USM department/laboratory to TWAS and USM when applying or by the deadline at the latest. Without preliminary acceptance, the application will not be considered for selection.
• Reference letters: Referees must send signed letters as attachment via e-mail directly to TWAS and USM. The subject line must contain: TWAS-USM/PG/candidate’s surname. Alternatively, letters should be sent by post in sealed envelopes.
• Applicants for the TWAS-USM Postgraduate Fellowship Programme should send their application to TWAS and USM.
