Introduction

The Department of Anaesthesia is among the busiest in the hospital, delivering perioperative and critical care services throughout the facility. It also plays a significant role in undergraduate and postgraduate education, contributing to anaesthesiology and critical care within multidisciplinary teams.

The postgraduate programme, Master of Medicine (MMed Anaesthesiology), is a four-year clinical training programme that began in 1993. The first batch successfully graduated in June 1997. The final year examination was conducted jointly for the first time in May 2008 with Universiti Malaya and Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia. Since 2013, both primary and final examinations have been conducted as conjoint exams. In recent years, the department has had one of the highest postgraduate MMed intakes at Universiti Sains Malaysia.
