HISTORY
The Department of Anaesthesiology & Intensive Care, School of Medical Sciences, Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM), was established in 1979 in Penang. In its formative years, the department was led by Dr. Richard Lobo (1979–1983), followed by Dr. Aswasthi (1984–1985). During this period, Penang General Hospital served as the primary teaching hospital for USM’s clinical programmes.
In 1986, the department relocated to the Health Campus in Kubang Kerian, Kelantan, in line with the full transition of the School of Medical Sciences to its current location.
In 1986, Dr. Reddy served as the first Head of Department (HOD) following the relocation of the Department of Anaesthesiology & Intensive Care to USM Health Campus, Kubang Kerian. He was succeeded by Dato’ Dr. Mohamed Hassan Mohamed Ariff (June 1987 – October 1989) and Dr. Aminuldin Abdul Ghani (1990–1995). As of 1 January 2025, the department is under the leadership of Associate Prof. Dr. Mohd Zulfakar Bin Mazlan, who brings with him a vision to further advance academic excellence, clinical innovation, and postgraduate training in anaesthesiology and intensive care.
