WELCOME TO THE SCHOOL OF MEDICAL SCIENCES USM HEALTH CAMPUS
INTRODUCTION
School of Medical Sciences, USM is one of the leading universities in Malaysia. USM has been entrusted as the first APEX university in Malaysia and is one of the established research universities in ASEAN region. USM offers an elective programs at numerous departments/laboratory/units for those who interested to undergoing their elective attachment at USM Health Campus, Kubang Kerian, Kelantan, Malaysia. It has adequate infrastructures, facilities and staffs that can assist the students to gain medical knowledge and upgrade their clinical skills and practices in the chosen field. USM also is equipped with a sophisticated library and other facilities and equipments, and has highly trained staffs and researchers that are willing to assist all students coming from around the world for their elective experiences at USM.

2. Laboratory based
3. Community based
CLINICAL ELECTIVE
It is ONLY open to the students who already underwent clinical year in their home university. Students may choose to do placements in the departments of their interest. They may choose to do placements in medical or surgical based departments or a combination of posting. However, the minimum period for a placement is two weeks and further information could be referred to Appendix A.
LABORATORY BASED ELECTIVE
USM has a variety of laboratory facilities. Students can choose to do placement in department of haematology, chemical pathology, Anatomy, pathology, immunology, microbiology, human genome, and many others. To ensure the application process can be carried out as soon as possible, students are advised to state the learning objectives to be followed. The approval of application will depend on the completeness of the form and presence of supervisor in selected department.
COMMUNITY BASED ELECTIVE
Activities related to community based are coordinated by Department of Community Medicine and Department of Family Medicine. Students could join a special program called Community and Family Case Studies, and invited to participate in hospital district placement in “Preventive and Primary Care" posting. However, students can freely determine their own direction based on the learning objectives.
APPLICATION FOR APPROVAL
- The application form can be fill through the link https://goo.gl/forms/Fi2PRZX5NrzmTEMl2 (google form). The documents for upload should be in jpeg or png files. Pdf file is not compatible.
- The original recommendation letter from home university should be attached.
- Copy of IC (Malaysian student) and passport copy (Non-Malaysian students) should be attached together with application form
- The requirement as mentioned in Appendix A should be fulfilled
- Students should read the terms and general guidelines and agree with the conditions imposed
- The selection of department will depends on the availability of the supervisor at the respective departments of choice. If there is no supervisor at respective department, the Elective secretariat will suggest the most suitable department for students to attach for their electives.
- The students has to pay the registration fee 30 days after getting the offer letter, before starting the attachment. The rate is USD152 for every 2 weeks of elective attachment.
- The hospital card access will cost MYR 25.00 and can be used to access the clinics, OT and wards.
- All students are encouraged to bring their own white coat, which need to be worn during all clinical activities in the hospital.
STUDENT PREPARATION
- All teaching & learning will be conducted in English
- Students need to be aware that they might be taught together with USM
students (i.e. clinical teaching or clinical presentation) - Main language used by patients and community is Bahasa Malaysia. Those who have proficiency in Bahasa would get better advantage.
- Any request related to accommodation will NOT be managed by the secretariat. Those who require rooms need to personally contact the hostel manager via email as return in Appendix A. List of hostel nearby the hospital could be obtained in Appendix C.

The conditions of elective posting at the School of Medical Sciences and University Hospital (USM) Kubang Kerian are the following:
- You will be registered as a non graduating USM student. Effective from Ogos 2018 , the fee is stated as below:
Citizens Fee Malaysian RM152 per two weeks Non-Malaysian USD152 per two weeks *Please pay to the Fees (as above) are to be paid within 30 days from the date of the offer letter. If you are making payment via telegraphic transfers, bank charges are to be borne by student.

- The program is ONLY open to the medical student who already in the clinical year at his / her university.
- Each of chosen posting need to be carried out within MINIMUM of two (2) weeks and the total number of posting should be MAXIMUM of three(3) in entire duration of placement;
- The application form should be completed via goggle link https://goo.gl/forms/Fi2PRZX5NrzmTEMl2 AT LEAST 3 MONTHS prior to the commencement of the placement. All the necessary documents should be upload via the link in jpg., jpeg or png format. The pdf format is not compatible with our system,.
- You will be subjected to the existing rules and regulations of the School of Medical Sciences that may be laid down by the school authority from time to time;
- You will not be allowed to take charge or treat any patient and will be under the charge of and supervised by specialist or senior consultants;
- All information, statistical data, medical records etc. obtained during your clinical attachments are strictly confidential and shall not be used for publications;
- You should ensure that you have adequate means of support and funds to meet all expenses during your stay in this country and you have to get the necessary clearance from the Immigration Authority (for overseas students only);
- You must submit a health and travel insurance applicable in Malaysia in your name within 30 days from the date of the offer letter. It should cover the duration of your elective period.
- You are required to adhere to the School dress regulation as attached in Appendix B;
- Not-withstanding the above, the Dean reserves the right to terminate your elective at any time without giving a reason.

DRESS REGULATON FOR MEDICAL SCIENCE STUDENTS
The following dress regulation for medical students of the School of
Medical Sciences is effective from the 1985/86 session.
This dress regulation is defined in a general way based on the following characteristics:-
- Safety at the laboratory and hospital
- Islamic value and culture
- Professional requirements
A. ATTIRE WHILE ATTENDING LECTURES AND TUTORIALS
Men’s Attire
- White coat should be wear at all times during clinical activities (ward round, Clinic)
- Shirts with collars (T-shirts are not allowed)
- Long pants (Jeans are not allowed)
- Shoes and socks (Slippers, sandals and sports shoes are not allowed)
- Cloaks are not allowed
- Name tag should be worn at all times
Women’s Attire
- White coat should be wear at all times during clinical activities (ward round, Clinic)
- T-shirts and jean are not allowed
- The dress length should not exceed the ankle but should be below the knee
- Low-cut dresses are not allowed
- Sleeveless dresses are not allowed
- Tight skirts with slits are not allowed
- Veils are not allowed
- Wearing of ornaments such a earring, necklace, bracelet etc. should be minimized and preferably avoided altogether
- Name tag should be worn and affixed to the dress
- Sports shoes are not allowed
B. ATTIRE WHILE IN HOSPITAL
Apart from the above conditions, students are to observe the following:-
- White coat with the name tag on should be wear at all times during clinical activities.
C. GENERAL REGULATION FOR BOTH MEN AND WOMEN
- The dress code that is required at certain places by the Hospital’s authority should be fully observed;
- Exposed hair should be kept short and neat;
- Fingernails should always be short and clean
- Clothes should always be clean and properly worn;
- Any other items which are in vogue but do not confirm to normal professional expectations would not be allowed e.g. earring for men.

TRANSPORTATION
- Transport will only be provided for the pick up at the airport based on the student’s request.
- Students should update the Elective Secretariat via email regarding flight details at least 2 week prior to the arrival date.
- Student are encouraged to install a phone application “” to ease his/ her daily transport around the city
- The public taxi and buses also available but the waiting time is longer.
ACCOMODATION
- You are responsible for your own accommodation. Should you require any assistant, please kindly contact the Elective Secretariat to assist Non Malaysian International student coming to USM for Elective to find a convenient accommodation, nearby University Campus if needed.
- Price for campus Hostel (DM5 & DM6) is now RM60 per day. Type of Room Apartment Single Room/ Double Room. *Add RM 5 for bed sheet and pillow cover per stay. Basic furniture like table, chair and bed, Air conditioned. No water heater. Cooking is not allowed.
