Reconstructive Sciences Unit is at the School of Medical Sciences, Universiti Sains Malaysia, Health Campus in Kelantan. Reconstructive Sciences Unit has been known as the leading tertiary referral center in the country especially in East Coast of Peninsular Malaysia for plastic and reconstructive surgery since 1997. It provides clinical services in the areas of reconstructive surgery, burn care and surgery and cleft and craniofacial surgery. We also got recognition from Ministry of Health for advanced training in plastic surgery. The unit provides learning programme to local and international students by offering Master of Surgery (Plastic Surgery) degree programme which is four-year training programme and research-based training at the Masters and PhD level. The unit also offers Post-doctoral fellowship in research endeavours for burgeoning scientists.
Reconstructive Sciences Unit also has strong emphasis on research. The research encompasses areas of biomaterials, tissue engineering, burn and wound care, reconstructive microsurgery and genetic research linked to cleft lips and palates. The unit received recognition and support from various international bodies, ministry and university via numerous grants. We pioneered the use of chitosan dressing which is based on shrimp industry waste serving as the template for three dimensional skin substitutes in collaboration with Standard and Industrial Research Institute of Malaysia (SIRIM) and Malaysian Nuclear Agency. Our research have been published in international and national journals, e-journals, proceedings and book chapters.
We involve in community service such as taking the role as catalyst for community education or out-reach service especially in prevention campaign and public education. We educate them in various aspects of burn management such as fire prevention, first aid and treatment and the rehabilitation process. To provide a platform for better understanding of wound and burn care, we organize seminar on burn and wound by course or workshop to all health practitioners in collaboration with Malaysian Society for Burns Injury (MSBI) and also Fire Preventor's Society (FPS). We develop a networking with world renowned center for technology development and transfer and update the recent development and advances in wound and burn care. We also collaborate with Malaysian Medical Relief Society (MERCY Malaysia) for Cleft Lip & Palate (CLIPP) Project to help bottom billion populations of cleft in Bangladesh. We give our expertise in its clinical management and intense our research activity in cleft for a betterment of management. Currently, we are starting to incorporate artificial intelligence into our research agenda and healthcare management as artifical intelligence sytem holds tremendous promise for transforming the provision of healthcare services.
