Welcome to the Department of Ophthalmology at School of Medical Sciences, Universiti Sains Malaysia. The department has a long history of educating undergraduate students, today’s and tomorrow’s ophthalmologists and visual science researchers, conducting clinical and visual science research and providing the best care for our patients.

 

The department was started in 1983 as just a small unit combined with department of ear, nose and throat. The unit was created to fill the requirement for undergraduate teaching of the university’s medical doctor program. In 1994, the unit became a department and separated from the department ear, nose and throat. The first intake of the postgraduate students in Master of Medicine (Ophthalmology) started in 1997. The visual science research cluster was created in 2010 to provide further excellence in clinical and visual science research.
