Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation

Magstim Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) is a non-invasive method to cause depolarization or hyperpolarisation in the neurons of the brain. TMS uses electromagnetic induction to induce weak electric currents using a rapidly changing magnetic field; this can cause activity in specific or general parts of the brain with minimal discomfort, allowing the functioning and interconnections of the brain to be studied.
Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) has been used to treat certain disorders, including depression and schizophrenia and to rehabilitate people after stroke. The therapy is particularly encouraging for the use of brain stimulation in chronic disease such as stroke and dementia.
We are the first hospital using an individual imaging-guided Neuronavigation of the TMS coil which is capable of achieving the precision in positioning the TMS coil that is necessary for successful and reliable TMS experiments and clinical treatments. This is because in traditional TMS studies the coil is positioned over the head using external landmarks and measurements or by trail and error until the desired response the finger twitch is generated.

However in recent years and with the improvement of stereotactic techniques, navigated TMS or NeuroNavigation is now possible allowing the TMS coil to be navigated and positioned over a specified target location based upon an individuals MRI image of the brain.

Targets for stimulation can then be identified in numerous ways:

i. manually by selecting and highlighting the desired structure / locations within the brain, or

ii. by combining anatomical MRI images with areas of activity highlighted with fMRI, EEG or MEG
Hence, the Department of  Neurosciences had organized TMS training on  18th July 2012. The training had conducted Dr Frank Zanow and joined with Neurosciences and physiatry.
