Research & Publications

At the Department of Neurosciences. School of Medical Sciences of the Universiti Sains Malaysia , we are proud to be one of a few leading centres in Malaysia that focused on the growth of research and innovation in neuroscience.

As an interdisciplinary field with range of research-oriented postgraduate degrees on offer, the environment in this Department promotes the integration of multiple fields in medical, health and allied health sciences in the spectrum of research that we undertake. This integration also takes into account the basic and clinical neuroscience to cater the wide ranging research areas that are currently been pursued by our postgraduate students. These areas also reflect the research interests amongst the various experts (both clinical and basic neurosciences) to meet the agenda of Universiti Sains Malaysia as a recognised leading university in Malaysia for research and innovation. The four major areas of research encompass clinical, behavioural, cellular and molecular elements.

The Department has a particular interest in the field of research that include neurobiology, neurogenetic, neurochemistry, ethnopharmacology, neuropsychology and cognitive neuroscience, neurooncology, neurodegenerative and regenerative medicine, and neuromechatronic. The areas of research interests explore avenues such as:
  • cellular mechanisms underlying neurological diseases (such as Parkinson's, Alzheimer's and epilepsy)
  • strategies to limit and potentially repair damage to the brain and spinal cord secondary to traumatic injury and vascular insults (such as stroke).
  • molecular mechanisms underlying the expression and function of ion channels and neurotransmitter receptor (such as epilepsy and brain tumours).
  • mechanisms of learning and memory; as well as reward and addiction.
  • neurogenesis and cellular biology including signal transduction, tumorigenesis, cellular interaction and neuronal stem cells.
  • roles of mitochondria in health and disease.
  • series of clinical neuroscience research focusing on therapeutic or surgical therapy, rehabilitation, outcome measures, psychological intervention, speech and language intervention, as well as participation in commercial clinical trials.
