Clinical Services

The Department of Neurosciences offers contemporary treatment avenues for a variety of neurological and neurosurgical diseases. Much of the clinical services expansion paralled the expansion of the neuroscience unit, placed within the Department of Surgery. Since its establishment, the unit had served as the tertiary centre for patients with neurological and neurosurgical conditions referred from various hospitals in the east coast of West Malaysia. The caseloads have increased more than twice prior to its existence. Reduction in the morbidity and mortality rates of the unit are apparent due to its superb facilities and trained personnels.
In recognition of the pace and achievements of the unit, the Neuroscience Unit at the  Hospital Universiti Sains Malaysia has grown into a centre of excellence for clinical neuroscience in Asia-Pacific region, and deservingly promoted as an independent Department.
The neurointensive unit with its annexed high dependency unit are equipped with numerous state-of-the-art machines and monitors to incorporate multimodality management of patients with head injury and other acute neurocritical conditions. The unit has its own mini laboratory to facilitate analyses of microdialysates and brain oxygen contents in addition to basic haematological and chemical investigations.

The neurosurgical operating theatres are equipped with operating microscopes, neuroendoscopic equipments, monitors for intraoperative neurophysiology and image guided system. With these facilities in place, the neurosurgical interventions offered in HUSM expand from the management of mere trauma procedures in the last decades to more intricate functional, vascular and microneurosurgical procedures in this millennium.

In addition, the neurophysiology laboratory is equipped with machines for electroencephalography, electromyography, nerve conduction studies, evoked potentials and with the latest addition of magnetoencephalography to facilitate the diagnosis of many neurological conditions as well their utility for extensive research in neuroscience.
