The Department of Paediatrics Hospital Pakar Universiti Sains Malaysia successfully organised the Diabetic Camp 2025 on 13–14 September 2025, involving 21 children and adolescents with diabetes. The camp aimed to enhance participants’ knowledge, self-care skills, and psychosocial support, while creating an environment that fostered learning, confidence, and peer bonding. The programme was carefully designed to balance educational sessions with recreational activities, ensuring both enrichment and enjoyment.

Day 1 Highlights

The programme commenced with registration, pre-test, and lunch at the Paediatric Clinic, Hospital Pakar USM, followed by transfer and check-in at the hotel. The first educational session introduced participants to the fundamentals of diabetes care.

In the afternoon, participants engaged in outdoor games such as Charades and Popping the Balloons, which promoted teamwork, creativity, and fun. This was followed by preparations for the much-anticipated Talent Time session.

The evening concluded with dinner and Talent Time, which emerged as one of the highlights of the camp. Participants, divided into groups, presented short drama sketches on diabetes-related themes:

  • Group 1: Managing a sick day.
  • Group 2: Complications of diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA).
  • Group 3: Practical tips for travelling with diabetes.
  • Group 4: Benefits of exercise and physical activity.
  • Group 5: Comparing hypoglycemia and hyperglycemia in a humorous yet educational performance.

The creativity and teamwork displayed were remarkable. The session successfully transformed learning into entertainment, reinforcing critical lessons in diabetes care memorably.

Day 2 Highlights

Day 2 began with breakfast and a morning energiser, setting an energetic tone for the day. This was followed by a series of interactive educational sessions covering:

  • Insulin administration techniques.
  • Recognition and management of hypoglycemia and hyperglycemia.
  • Sick day and DKA management.
  • Exercise and school life.
  • Psychosocial support.

The morning concluded with a photo session and short break, followed by a post-test, prize-giving ceremony, and closing session, before check-out and lunch.

Conclusion

The Diabetic Camp 2025 effectively combined education, recreation, and psychosocial support in a meaningful and impactful manner. The structured teaching sessions improved knowledge and practical self-care skills, while games and group activities fostered confidence, resilience, and friendships. The interactive Talent Time not only entertained but also reinforced essential principles of diabetes management, making learning both memorable and enjoyable.

Overall, the camp left a lasting positive impact on the participants, empowering them to better manage their condition while feeling supported within a community of peers.
